The coats go first, then the shoes, then the long goodbye that happens standing up in the hallway and takes another twenty minutes.
He loves this part. He always has. Somebody has one more thing to say with their arm already in one sleeve, and somebody else is laughing at the door with the cold air coming in around them, and he stands there with the tin of cookies he is trying to send home with the wrong person.
Then the last of them says it, casually, half turned to go: "You believe all that, don't you."
Not even a question, really. It was said kindly. It was said by somebody who has known him eleven years and has clearly worked something out, and who is now standing on his front step in the last of the light waiting for an answer that would cost him almost nothing.
And he says: "Ah, you know. Something like that."
The door closes. He stands there in the hallway with his hand still on the latch and the coats swinging slightly on the hooks behind him, and something goes through him that is not quite shame and is worse than shame, because shame at least has a reason.
Nineteen years.
That is roughly how long it has been true. He could tell you the week. He has read the whole thing through more than once. He prays, in his way, most days, in the car and at night and in a supermarket line once when he did not expect to. He has believed it privately for nineteen years the way you might carry a photograph in a wallet, and in nineteen years he has never once said it in a room where another human being could hear him.
And it is not fear of being mocked. He would like it to be something that clean.
It is that saying it out loud would make it a thing. Silent, it is his. Spoken, it is real, and real things have consequences and expectations and people who will ask him about it in six months.
Now let me stop calling him he.
Because you know the almost. You know the number of times the sentence has come all the way up to your teeth and turned round. There was the conversation at work, and the one with your brother in the car, and the one where the person was actually asking, genuinely asking, and you gave them something vague and hated yourself in the kitchen afterwards.
Stay in the hallway with me for a minute. Nobody is coming. This is not going to end with me asking you to tell your brother.

The word that is already in your mouth
Paul is writing to people arguing about how a person comes to be right with God, and he cuts through all of it with an image that has your hallway in it.
He says nobody has to climb into the sky to fetch Christ down, and nobody has to go down into the deep to bring Him up. All that reaching is off the table. And then:
The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.Romans 10, verses 8 and 9
Look at where he puts it. Not on a shelf you have to reach. Not at the end of a process you have to complete. Near you. In two places, and he names them in this order: in your mouth, and in your heart.
You have had the heart half for nineteen years. That is not nothing, and I want to say clearly that it was never counterfeit. Whatever you have concluded about yourself in kitchens after vague answers, the quiet believing was real believing.
You have the word already in your mouth and in your heart, and Paul rules out both places people go looking for it. The written word says nobody has to climb or descend to fetch it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put it that near.
What has not happened yet is the mouth.
And notice, because this is the part that undoes the knot: Paul does not attach an audience. He does not say confess it to a crowd, or to your family, or in a building, or in front of anyone in particular. He says confess with your mouth. The specification is anatomical, not social. It is about a sentence leaving a body.
Which means the thing you have been afraid of and the thing that is actually being asked of you are two different things.
You have been picturing the version with a room full of people in it. The one where your brother goes quiet and your colleague files it away and there are consequences you cannot predict. That may come one day, or it may not, and either way it is not tonight and I am not going to hand it to you as a task.
You are somebody in whom the heart half has been true for nineteen years, and it was never counterfeit. Scripture joins the believing and the confessing without putting a gap between them, and the Holy Spirit in you has been the evidence of the first the whole time.
Tonight there is a hallway with coats in it and nobody in the house.
Here is why the mouth matters, and it is not a formality. A thing said out loud stops being a private opinion and becomes something you have stood in. Your ears hear it. Your body registers a person speaking. That is why He asked for it: not to test whether you are brave enough, but because saying it is how a human being lands on the ground they were already standing on.
And there is nothing provisional about you in the meantime. Nothing about the last nineteen years has been on hold pending a sentence. God has not been waiting at arm's length to see whether you would go public. You are not less His at half past eight this evening than you will be at twenty five past nine.
This is not a hurdle. It is a homecoming with a voice in it.
You are saved, and the confession asks for a mouth rather than an audience. The word of God names an organ and never once names a room, and the Holy Spirit is the seal on a man about to say it in his own hallway.
So here is what is available to you in your hallway, right now, with the latch still cold under your hand.
You can say it. Once. Out loud, at ordinary volume, in an empty house where nobody hears it but you and the God it is about. That is not a rehearsal for the real thing. It is the real thing.
There is no audience required. No message to write, nothing to post anywhere, nobody to ring tonight, and no room you have to walk into on Sunday for this to count. Alone at speaking volume is the whole of it, and if you never do it in front of another person, what happens in the next sixty seconds is still entirely real.
And if somewhere down the line you want to go further with this, if you want water and a church and people, that is a good thing and there are people who will help you find it. It is not the price of tonight. Tonight is just a sentence and a hallway.
The word is near you. It is already in your mouth. All that is left is to let it out where your own ears can hear it.
You are one of His, and saying it out loud in your own hallway is the whole of what is asked. Scripture puts the confession in a mouth and never once names an audience, and the Holy Spirit in you is the reason nineteen private years were never empty ones.
Declare this over yourself
You are not working something up. You are speaking from ground that is already under you: you are in Christ, and the standing to say this has been given to you rather than earned by you, so your voice does not have to be steady for it to be real. And however He answers, whatever tomorrow looks like, what you are about to say is true before you say it and stays true afterwards.
- Silence I have kept for nineteen years, you are not humility and you do not get my mouth tonight. Scripture says that if I confess with my mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in my heart that God raised Him from the dead I am saved, so in the name of Jesus I say it out loud and it is mine.
- Voice of mine, you are steady enough for one sentence and you are exactly what He asked for. Jesus Christ is my Lord, and I am not keeping Him in a wallet in this hallway or anywhere else.
- God, You heard that and it is written down where it counts, and I thank You that what I have believed quietly is now said out loud. Your word is near me, in my mouth and in my heart, and tonight my mouth has caught up with my heart.
