It rained at the last one, hard, the sort of rain that comes sideways off a parking lot and gets in at the collar.
He stood at the back with his coat still on because there had not been anywhere to put it. Somebody's aunt was filming on a phone held above her head. A child two rows in front kept turning round to look at him, in that unembarrassed way children have, and he pulled a face at her and she laughed and turned back.
And down at the front, a lad of about twenty three, soaked, grinning like the world had just been handed to him, saying something that everybody laughed at and he could not hear from where he was.
He clapped. He meant it. He has meant it every single time.
Twenty years of meaning it. Twenty years of the back row, the coat, the rain on somebody else's day, the drive home, the kettle. Twenty years of being genuinely, uncomplicatedly glad for other people, and then standing in his own kitchen with his coat over the chair and a feeling he has never once put into a sentence.
Not envy. He has checked. It is nothing as clean as envy.
It is closer to the feeling of arriving somewhere you have every right to be and going in through the wrong door. Everybody is pleased to see you. Nobody asks you anything. And you spend the whole evening slightly to one side of the room, in a coat, being glad for people.
You are safe here. And before anything else, I want to tell you what is not going to happen in the next few minutes, because you have braced for all of it.
Nobody is going to ask you why. Not gently, not sideways, not at the end. I am not going to wonder aloud what has held you back, or invite you to think about it, or leave a thoughtful silence where the question could sit. It is not my business, and the fact that you have never said it out loud to anybody is not a fault in you.
Nothing here is going to be settled about the water either. Not what it does, not who it is for, not what counts, not any of it. That argument is a real argument and it belongs on a page built for it. Today is not that page and you are not that argument.
And nothing at the end is going to nudge you anywhere. When this finishes, it finishes.

The one sentence He said about the ones who come
There is a line of Jesus that people quote so often it has gone soft, and it is worth hearing hard, because you are exactly the person it is about.
All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.John 6:37
Read the second half slowly.
Whoever. Not whoever has done the sequence in the right order. Not whoever arrived on time. Whoever, which is a word with no gate in it, deliberately, and He chose it.
Comes. Present. Ongoing. Not came correctly once. A person who is coming, right now, in a coat, in a kitchen, after twenty years of standing at the back.
You are one of the ones that sentence was built for, and it was built wide on purpose. The written word says whoever comes is never cast out, and the Holy Spirit in you is the reason a line worn soft by quoting is sharp again this morning.
Never cast out. Not put outside. Not held at the door. Not left standing near the entrance while it is decided. He said never, and He said it about anyone who comes, and He did not attach one condition to it anywhere in the sentence.
Now let me say the thing that this whole message exists to say, and I want to say it without softening it.
You are not behind.
Behind assumes a schedule, and there is no schedule with your name on it and a red mark beside it. There is no line. There is no list in heaven of the ones who have and the ones who have not, with yours in the wrong column, quietly getting older.
You have been reading twenty years as a growing debt. Twenty years is not a debt. It is twenty years of a man who kept turning up, in the rain, to be glad for other people, which is one of the least noticed and most costly things a human being can do.
And you are not disqualified. Nothing has been withheld from you, nothing is on hold, nothing about your standing with God is provisional or partial or waiting. If you have ever quietly wondered whether you are a slightly lesser sort of believer, a member with fewer rights, that is not a thing that exists, and it never was.
You have been given to the Son by the Father, and that was settled without reference to how long you stood on the bank. Scripture puts the giving and the receiving in one sentence with no conditions between them, and the Holy Spirit is God's own deposit on it.
I will say one more, because it is where the ache actually lives. You have felt, at the back, in the coat, like a person watching a family from outside a window.
You are not outside the window. You are at the table and always have been, and the only person in the room who did not know it was you.
You are at the table now, and you were at it for the whole twenty years you spent thinking you were near it. The word of God settles that and the Holy Spirit is the seal, and no window in any building ever had the authority to say otherwise.
So here is the turn, and it takes place entirely where you are standing.
You are not going to be moved anywhere. You are going to be told what is already true about you, and you are going to say it back in your own voice, out loud, in your own kitchen, with your coat still over the chair if it is.
He has never once put you outside. That is not a promise about something to come. It is a description of every single one of those twenty years, including the wet ones, including the drives home, including the evening you sat in the car for a minute before going in.
Because you are in Christ, this standing is already yours, given to you and not earned by anything you have done or not done, and the authority you are about to exercise is His, carried in His name. What He does with anything else, and when, is His to decide, and He may answer in His own way. What is settled right now is that you are received, today, exactly as you are.
If it does not land in your chest while you say it, say it anyway. Feelings arrive last. They always have.
You are His this morning, twenty years dry, and the bank you have been standing on is not a lower kind of ground. The word says the one who comes to Christ is welcomed and kept, and the Holy Spirit in you is the seal on a welcome that was never partial.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud, in your own kitchen, at ordinary speaking volume. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not a man hoping something is true. It is an ambassador saying out loud what his King has already said, and however He answers and whatever He does from here is His and it is good.
- Behind, you are not my name and you have no authority to give me one. Jesus said whoever comes to Him is never cast out, so I come today, dry as I am, and I am received.
- Disqualified, go, in the name of Jesus, because there is no lesser membership and no partial welcome in the house of God. Twenty years of standing on the bank is not a debt and it is not a mark against my standing.
- Lord, You have never once put me outside, and Your word says the one who comes to Christ is welcomed and kept. I take my place at Your table today, at this tap, with my hands under the water and my heart at rest.
