She had asked five people.
That is the detail she comes back to, seven years on. Not four. Five. She had the WhatsApp thread and she had gone down it one at a time like a woman working a phone tree, and she had been prepared to owe every single one of them a favor for the rest of the year.
Dani had her sister's wedding. Marek was already on a double. Chloe said yes and then her childminder fell through on the Thursday. The agency girl whose name she can no longer remember said she would ask and then simply did not reply, which is its own answer. And Bev, who owed her three shifts and both of them knew it, said, "Babe, I would, but I cannot do a Sunday," and that was that.
So on the Sunday morning that had been circled since March, she was on the ward at seven, doing obs, being extremely good at her job.
She remembers what she was doing at eleven. She was in the sluice, of all places, and she stood still for about four seconds and thought, that is happening now, and then a buzzer went and she went, and the four seconds were the whole of it.
Nobody was cross with her. That is the thing. The woman who was arranging it sent a lovely message that said totally understand, we will sort another date, with a heart on it. And she replied thank you so much, with two hearts, because she is that sort of person.
And then nobody sorted another date.
Not out of unkindness. There was no other date because nobody rebooked it, and nobody rebooked it because she did not ask, and she did not ask because asking a second time felt like making a fuss about something she had already been let off.
That was seven years ago. She is a band six now. She has been at two of those Sundays since, standing at the back with her coat still on because she came straight from a shift, clapping for somebody else and meaning every clap.
And here is the bit she has never said out loud to anyone: somewhere in the last seven years she stopped thinking of it as a date that got missed and started thinking of it as a thing about her. As if the schedule had said something true. As if being the one who could not get the Sunday off was a category of person, and she was in it.

The schedule did not say anything about you
I want to go straight at the thing, because I do not think you need a long run up.
A shift pattern is not a verdict.
I know you know that. You would say it back to me instantly if I put it as a question. But knowing a thing in the front of your head and having it settled underneath you are two different arrangements entirely, and seven years of walking into that room with your coat on has been quietly building the second thing out of the first.
So let me put what is actually true underneath you.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.Ephesians 2:8 and 9
Take that verse apart slowly. Not of yourselves. You did not contribute anything to your standing with God and you have not lost anything from it, because it was never assembled out of your contributions in the first place. That is not encouragement. It is the written word, and the Holy Spirit is the reason it is settling into you now rather than being filed with everything else you already know.
And look at the word gift. Not wages. Not a reward. A gift is a thing whose value sits entirely with the giver and whose arrival owes nothing whatsoever to the diary of the person receiving it.
Now here is what I think happened, and you can tell me I have it wrong.
It was never about that one Sunday. That Sunday was ordinary and the reason was ordinary and everybody involved behaved well. What happened is that the missing of it went unaddressed for long enough that your mind, which is a good and orderly mind, filed it somewhere. And the place it got filed was not admin. It was identity. And once a thing is in that drawer it stops being an event and starts being a description.
You are not the woman who could not get the Sunday off. That is a thing that happened to a schedule. You are a woman saved by grace through faith, and the word of God is what says so, and the Spirit who was with you in the sluice at eleven o'clock on that Sunday morning is the one making it true in you rather than merely true in general.
I want to say something about the sluice, actually.
Because you have been quietly embarrassed about where you were standing at the moment it happened. A sluice room. Not a beach, not a river, not a church. A small room that smells of disinfectant, four seconds of standing still, and then a buzzer.
He was there. That is the whole of what I want to say about it. God was not at the other thing wishing you had made it. You were not missed by Him for one second of that morning, and Scripture is where that certainty comes from, and the Spirit is what makes it more than a nice thought, and a sluice room at eleven o'clock is exactly the sort of place He has always turned up in.
And one more, because this is the one I think you will carry out.
You have nothing to make a fuss about, because you were never let off anything. There was nothing outstanding. There has been nothing outstanding for seven years. The reason nobody rebooked it is not that you failed to ask loudly enough. It is that a gift does not need rebooking, and the word says it is a gift, and the Spirit inside you has been the proof of that since long before anybody circled a date in March.
You are held by something that was never on the schedule, and it was already yours in the sluice at eleven o'clock. The word says it is a gift and not of works, and the Holy Spirit is God's own deposit on a woman who was doing obs that morning.
So here is the turn, and it is very small, and small is right, because nothing large is broken.
Nothing is being rearranged today. There is no diary in this, and no nudge, and when you close this page you will not owe anybody a message. That is a promise and I am keeping it.
What is moving is a filing error. Seven years ago a thing got put in the wrong drawer and it has been sitting there ever since being read as a description of you, and it is not a description of you. It is an old schedule.
You are not the person who could not get the Sunday off. You are a woman who was given something, by grace, that no shift pattern ever had access to.
You are a woman who was given something, and the diary never had access to it. Scripture calls it grace through faith and puts it outside anybody's scheduling, and the Spirit of God in you is the proof it arrived without a date.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud, in your own voice, at the volume you would use for a handover. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not a woman hoping something is true. It is an ambassador saying out loud what her King has already said, and however He answers and whatever He does from here is His and it is good.
- Missed Sunday, you were one date on one schedule and you are not the measure of what God has given me. The word says my standing is a gift and not of myself, so there was never anything outstanding for anyone to rebook.
- Category I put myself in, in the name of Jesus you are not a category and I am not in you. The Holy Spirit was in that sluice room with me at eleven o'clock, and God does not describe a daughter by a shift pattern.
- Lord, You gave it as a gift before it was ever a date, and Your word says it is not of works so that nobody can boast. I am saved by grace through faith today, coat on, straight off a shift, and I am standing here as one of Yours.
