It is a ceiling height and a particular kind of light and she can tell within about two steps of the door.
High ceiling. Long windows down one side. Wooden floor. Chairs set out in rows rather than round anything, and a table at the front, and that specific cold overhead light that municipal buildings have had since forever.
She has stood in four of them in the last three years and every single time the same thing happens, which is that she becomes eight.
Not visibly. She would like that understood. She is a woman who runs a department. She has chaired things. She has told a supplier on a phone call, in front of six people, exactly what was going to happen, and she was right and it happened.
But in that kind of room, at the moment where a thing is opened up and people start speaking, something in her sits down at the back of her own throat and folds its hands.
She has ideas. That is what makes it maddening. She has, on three separate occasions, watched somebody say the exact thing she was holding, forty minutes later, less well, and get a nod for it.
The room she was small in had a high ceiling and long windows and a wooden floor and that light. She has known this since she was about thirty-one, and knowing it has changed nothing at all, which is the part nobody tells you about knowing things.
She is forty-eight.
And the sentence that sits underneath it is not about the room, and she has never said it out loud, and it is: this is the actual size of me, and everything else is the department.

Which room is telling the truth
I want to go straight at the sentence, because everything else on this page is in service of it.
This is the actual size of me, and everything else is the department.
That is the same claim that always turns up in these things, and it is always the same shape: the version of you that appears under a specific old pressure is the true one, and everything you have built since is a performance.
It is a lie with excellent manners. And you can see it is a lie by noticing what it does with evidence. It takes four rooms with a certain ceiling height and it overrules eleven years of a department, a chaired meeting, and a phone call in front of six people where you were right.
No honest weighing produces that answer. Only an accusation does.
Now here is what has actually been done about you.
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.John 8:36
Two things in that sentence and both matter for a woman in a municipal building.
The first is who is doing it. Not the woman. The Son. The freeing is somebody else's act, performed on her, which means it is not undone by her performance in any room.
The second is the word indeed. In the Greek it is the word for really, actually, in fact. Jesus uses it to distinguish the freedom He gives from a freedom that is nominal, a freedom you have on paper and not in the building.
You are free indeed, which is the kind that is true in the room as well as on the paper, and that is not encouragement for a woman with a throat that closes, it is what He said out loud, and the Holy Spirit is the reason it is landing on the sentence rather than on your fairly settled theology.
Now let me say something about knowing.
You worked out the ceiling and the windows and the light at thirty-one and it changed nothing, and you have quietly concluded from that that nothing can change it.
That does not follow. Understanding a mechanism has never been what shifts it, and you would not expect it to anywhere else in your life. Knowing why a knee gives out does not stop it giving out. What you got at thirty-one was accurate information, and accurate information is worth having, and it was never the cure and was never advertised as one.
You are not somebody for whom nothing works. You are somebody who correctly diagnosed a thing and then waited for the diagnosis to do the work of a treatment. Scripture puts the freeing in the Son's hands, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes it operational in an actual room, and neither of those has ever needed you to out-think a ceiling.
I want to say something about the three times, too.
You watched somebody say your thing, forty minutes later, less well, and get a nod. You have been carrying good things into rooms that did not receive them from you, and that is a real loss and I am not going to pretend it is a small one, and God did not miss any of the three. Scripture records Jesus saying that whoever the Son makes free is free indeed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that work in a building rather than only on paper.
And here is the last of it, and it is for the moment two steps inside the door.
You are free indeed and you were free indeed in all four of those rooms. The word says the Son does the freeing and the Spirit is the seal on it, and a throat that closes under an old light is a reflex in a body, not a measurement of a soul, and it has never once been the actual size of you.
So here is the turn, and it does not require you to speak in the next one.
You might. You might not. Four rooms in three years is not a lot of practice at anything, and nobody here is setting you a target for the next meeting.
What moves is which room is giving evidence.
For three years, and really for forty years, a certain ceiling height has been treated as the place where the truth about you comes out. It is not. It is a place where an old reflex fires, and a reflex is a piece of history in a body, and history is not a measurement.
The freeing was done by the Son, and He did it indeed, which is His own word for the difference between a freedom on paper and a freedom in a building.
You walk into the next one already free. Whether your voice comes with you the first time is a smaller question than you have been treating it as.
You are free indeed, which is His own word for the freedom that works in a building and not only on paper. The written word puts the freeing in the Son's hands as His act, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it operational in a room with chairs in rows.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud, at the volume you used on that phone call in front of six people. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not a woman asking for confidence. It is an ambassador saying out loud what her King has already said, and however He answers and whatever He does from here is His and it is good.
- Silence in that room, you are an old reflex under a certain light and you are not my portion. Jesus said that whoever the Son makes free is free indeed, and indeed is His own word for the freedom that is true in a building and not only on paper.
- Sentence that says this is the actual size of me, in the name of Jesus you are an accusation with good manners and you are leaving. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that freedom operational in an actual room, and He has never once needed me to out-think a ceiling.
- Lord, You did the freeing Yourself and Your word says it is free indeed. A throat that closes under an old light is history in a body and it is not a measurement of me, and I am walking into the next room already free.
