The Thing I Have Never Said In A Room

She has said it to God about four thousand times.

In the car. On the stairs. Lying on her side at three in the morning with her eyes open, in that particular flat interior voice that is not really praying and is not really thinking either. She has said it while running a tap. She has said it in a supermarket car aisle, out loud, quietly, and a woman looked at her.

She has never said it with another human being in the room.

Not once, in nineteen years. Not to her husband, who is a good man and would not leave. Not to the woman who has been her closest friend since college and who has told her things that would take the top of your head off. Not to a professional, of whom she has seen two, for other things, competently, and got value from, and steered around this each time with a skill that surprised her.

She is fifty-one.

What it is is hers and it is not going in this. That is not evasion, it is the point: what it actually is matters far less than what she has built around it, and if you knew the specifics you would immediately start sorting her, and sorting her is exactly what she has spent nineteen years avoiding.

Here is what she has built around it. A very small room, off the side of a life that is otherwise extremely open. She is not a secretive woman. People say she is easy to talk to and they are right.

But there is a door, and it does not get opened, and over nineteen years she has come to a settled understanding about that door which she has also never said out loud. It goes: God has forgiven this, and it can never be said in a room, and those two facts sit side by side and one of them does not fix the other.

And underneath that, in a place she visits rarely and quickly, there is a third thing: if it cannot be said out loud to a person, how forgiven is it really.

Nobody is asking you to say it

Let me put this beyond doubt at the top, because you will not be able to take in a word of the rest until it is settled.

Nothing on this page asks you to tell anybody.

Not your husband. Not your friend from college. Not a professional. There is no gentle turn coming, no suggestion that you might feel better if, no closing paragraph that leaves the door open a crack in the hope you walk through it. You can finish this page having told nobody anything, and it will have done its whole work.

I am saying that first because a woman who has steered around this with two professionals will be watching for the maneuver, and I do not want you spending the next nine minutes waiting for it.

Now let me go to the third thing. The one you visit rarely and quickly.

If it cannot be said out loud to a person, how forgiven is it really.

That is the question underneath, and I want to answer it directly, because it is a real question and it deserves better than reassurance.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.1 John 1:9

Read who the confession is made to. Him. Not to a room. Not to a person. The verse is written to believers and the transaction in it is between a person and God, and there is no second party anywhere in the sentence.

And look at the two words describing Him in it. Faithful and just. Not merciful and generous, though He is. Faithful, meaning He does what He said He would do. And just, meaning the forgiving is not a favor He is doing at some cost to His own integrity, but the correct and settled outcome of something already dealt with.

You are forgiven, and you were forgiven the first of those four thousand times, and that is not comfort, it is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is the reason it is landing in the small room rather than in the part of you that already knew the verse.

Now let me say something about the four thousand times, because I think you have read them as evidence of something.

You have said it to God in a car, on a stairs, at three in the morning, running a tap. Somewhere you have started to suspect that saying it that often means it has not taken.

It does not mean that. Repetition is what a person does with a thing that hurts, and it is what a person does with a thing they love, and it is what a person does at three in the morning, and none of it is an audit of the transaction.

You have not been failing to be forgiven for nineteen years. Scripture says He is faithful and just, which puts the reliability entirely on His side, and the Spirit of God is the one who has been with you in every one of those cars and on every one of those stairs.

I want to say something about the room, too, and about why it feels the way it does.

Saying a thing out loud with another person present does something no private confession does. It ends the management. It puts a thing where it can be met rather than handled. That is why it is frightening and it is also why people find it so freeing, and it is a real good, and it is not a requirement of your forgiveness, and I am not going to blur those two together in order to move you toward a door.

You are cleansed from all unrighteousness, and the word says all, and the Spirit is the seal on it, and there is no clause in that verse about the presence of witnesses.

And if what is on you tonight is heavier than this, if it has got as far as not wanting to be here at all, please tell one human being tonight. A doctor, a crisis line in your own country, one person who can sit with you. That is not a detour from any of this. It is part of it, and you are worth the phone call.

You are cleansed from all unrighteousness, and all is the whole of the measurement rather than most of it. Scripture says He is faithful and just to do it, and the Holy Spirit has been with you in every car and on every stair at three in the morning.
